There are custom fitted mouthguards that can be made by a dentist so that it will fit you perfectly. You can find boil and bite mouthguards at sporting goods stores that can be softened in hot water. They will also mould to your teeth. There are pre-formed stock mouthguards that are ready to wear but these will not fit as well as the custom or the boil-and-bite options. You have to avoid chewing on hard objects such as pens, ice etc. as this will crack and chip your teeth. Some people are used to opening bottles or packages with their teeth and these can increase the risk of dental emergencies.

Your diet has a big impact on your oral health.

When you consume sugary foods and drinks, this can contribute to tooth decay. Another culprit that can erode the enamel is acidic food. So if you consume these, you have to rinse your mouth with water afterwards. You also need to eat a balanced diet that has vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and whole grains. Some have habits such as teeth grinding or clenching. This can lead to increased wear, tooth fractures and jaw pain. This can happen in your sleep. A nightguard will be a good way to protect your teeth from this. Avoiding tobacco products will bring down your risk for gum disease, oral cancer and tooth decay. It is important that you address dental issues early on before they become emergencies.
